Disney Picks Up Miyazaki’s ‘The Wind Rises’ for US Distribution

For as long as I’ve enjoyed the works of Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and their team of animators at Studio Ghibli, the US distribution of their movies has been exclusively handled by Disney.

This included releases in both theatrical (Ponyo, The Secret World Of Arrietty, etc.) and domestic (Princess MononokeWhisper of the Heart, etc.) aspects. This deal with Tokuma Shoten Publishing lasted from 1996 to 2011 when a new, brief, deal was made with Gkids to handle theatrical releases while Disney was to remain the sole publisher of domestic video in the US. That was how it was understood, yet Gkids are distributing the upcoming Goro Miyazaki film, From Up on Poppy Hill.

The question was then raised as to Disney’s involvement with the Japanese animation studio. Was the partnership over? It almost appeared so. Alas, Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter tweets today that The Wind Rises will, in fact, be handled by Disney. He adds that no date for this release has been announced just yet.

Regardless, we’re still glad that The Wind Rises is coming state side eventually. The film will have its first North American screening TIFF in a few weeks.
