Matt Damon Comments On Ben Affleck As Batman

The internet has been buzzing with praise and fury over the casting of Ben Affleck as Batman in the upcoming Man Of Steel sequel since the announcement hit the web late last week. Even though the focus of the film will still be on Henry Cavill’s (questionable) portrayal of Clark Kent, nerds and fanboys worldwide seem worried that the man many blame for Daredevil will somehow soil the cowl Chris Nolan and Christian Bale worked so hard to resurrect. Affleck has not responded to this chatter, but in a new interview with The Times Of India frequent collaborator Matt Damon did offer some thoughts on the fuss taking place in comic culture.

“I think it will be great. It will be terrific,” Damon said of Affleck’s Batman during a new interview. “I know there are a lot of people grousing on the internet. I just think it’s kind of funny. You know, he’s not playing King Lear. It’s Batman! Certainly within his skill set. If anybody saw Argo or The Town and all the work he’s been doing lately, it’s way more nuanced and interesting and way more difficult than Batman! Batman just sits there with his cowl over his head and whispers in a kinda gruff voice at people.”

He later added, “Bruce Wayne is the more challenging part of the role, and Ben will be great at that… But it’s safe to say I won’t be Robin.”

If reports coming in over the weekend are to be believed, Affleck’s deal for Batman includes appearances in multiple upcoming DC Comics features (similar to how Robert Downey Jr. pops in and out of the Marvel Universe). Again, the actor has offered no comment.

Whether Affleck is on board as Bruce Wayne for one feature or nine, it doesn’t seem like the outcry of fearful Bat-fanatics will be calming anytime soon. As Holden McNeil explains:
