If you had told me in 2005 that Hayley Williams would one day be collaborating with one of the biggest producers in the world for a straight-up club track I probably would have called you crazy, but here we are in 2013 and the impossible has happened.
After a week or so of teasers and promotion, Zedd has finally posted his long-awaited new single “Stay The Night” online for streaming worldwide. The track features vocals from Paramore vocalist Hayley Williams and, as I teased in the introduction, is destined for dance club glory. You’ll find the song at the end of this post.
There is nothing immediately unique about “Stay The Night” outside of Williams’ appearance. The lyrics, like so many EDM-infused pop hits as of late, touch on the feeling of immortality that comes with seizing the night and throwing all cares to the wind, with plenty of thumping bass and pulsing synth to guide the way. It’ll fit nicely in top 40 rotation alongside whatever Ellie Goulding released last, but I highly doubt this track will have any kind of substantial shelf life. Anything she touches I am immediately willing to give all my time to.
A couple of years ago I read an article about EDM going mainstream and how that was going to result in a lot of middle of the road pop songs with an EDM infusion for the masses hitting the airwaves in amongst genuinely awesome dance tracks.
And here we are with this pop-with-a-drop generic chart-topper that has dumbed
itself down enough to become palatable to the undiscerning masses.
