Janelle Monáe Electric on Letterman

On Monday night, the eve of her album’s release, Janelle Monáe performed “Dance Apocalyptic” on the Late Show With David Letterman. She didn’t disappoint.

True to her single, she danced as if the world was aflame. Shimmying like her life depended, Monáe left the floor in dire need of a waxing before hopping onto Letterman’s desk for a few furious steps. That would’ve been enough, but she put an exclamation point on the performance by flipping the microphone stand, tearing apart her signature hairdo, and scooting off into the crowd. Even Letterman seemed to be riding the wave of excitement emanating from his guest.

It was a performance that, much like her mammoth new album The Electric Lady, showcased just how unique a pop star Monáe is. It should be noted, for the uninformed, that The Electric Lady comprises the fourth and fifth parts of her Metropolis concept series. Androids! Bounty hunters! A tragic romance! The only thing small about the singer is her stature.
