‘Insidious 3’ Is On The Way (Without James Wan?)

After a $41 million opening weekend with Insidious: Chapter 2 that nearly doubled industry expectations, Entertainment One (eOne), FilmDistrict, and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions (SPWA) together announced today that they will be developing the a third entry in the Insidious franchise. Writer Leigh Whannell will return, but as of right now director James Wan is nowhere to be found.

Regardless of how you feel about this news, it should come as no surprise such an announcement was made. Both Insidious films were made for well under $5 million dollars each, but together they have already grossed well over $100 million. To not try and milk a cow that fat once more would be akin to blasphemy in the current movie industry.

In a joint statement, Peter Schlessel, FilmDistrict’s CEO, Xavier Marchand, eOne’s President, Film Production, and Steven Bersch, President of SPWA, said, “The release of the first Insidious resonated with audiences around the world and quickly became one of the most talked about films in 2011. This weekend moviegoers enjoyed the terrifying continuation of the first film and we are confident they will be excited to see the third chapter of the Insidious world. There is nobody better suited to bring audiences the next chapter of this haunting story than Leigh who has brilliantly written both Insidious and Insidious Chapter 2.”

As I mentioned in the opening paragraph, director James Wan has not been mentioned in any of the material regarding the third Insidious film. He recently announced that he was moving on from horror altogether, which leads us to believe a new (or perhaps legendary) talent will step behind the camera for the next installment. Who that could be is anyone’s guess at this point, but rest assured we’ll keep you updated as the project begins to take shape.

If you could choose someone to take the reigns on Insidious: Chapter 3, who would you pick? Comment below and let us know your thoughts.
