Miley Cyrus ‘Wrecking Ball’ Video Prompts University To Remove Sculpture Following Nude Student Parodies

This was bound to happen sooner or later, right? Let’s just be happy no one was (hilariously) hurt.

Grand Valley State University in Michigan has announced removal of a long-standing sculpture from its campus following an outbreak of nude students spotted parodying the video for Miley Cyrus’ new single, “Wrecking Ball.” No, this is not a joke.

The sculpture at the center of this story is essentially a wrecking ball suspended a few feet off the ground by a large metal chain. As far as we can tell the sculpture has never drawn much attention in the 18 years it has been on campus, but after seeing Miley Cyrus swing naked from a gigantic wrecking ball in her new video the location became a hotbed for students hoping for viral fame. Here’s one of the photos posted to instagram just hours after the video went live:

It’s admittedly pretty funny, but school officials stepped in on Tuesday morning to put a halt to everyone’s fun by removing the sculpture, fearing it may not be stable enough to handle the extra weight students were exerting upon it.

“We really do need to verify the structural integrity right now, and consider the safety ramifications and look whether there’s a better way to install it,” said Tim Thimmesch, associate vice president of facilities services.

No word yet on when or if the sculpture will return, but I doubt students will ever be as interested in it as they have been the last week. Comment below and let us know your thoughts.
