Madonna Peforms A Dramatic Cover Of Elliott Smith’s “Between The Bars”

Sometimes artists cover artists from other genres that we could never had expected. While Elliott Smith may have ended his time as a major label act (on the short lasting major label of Dreamworks), I doubt any of us could predict in 2013, Madonna would cover one of his most well known songs for the premier of her short film, secretprojectrevolution. She got dragged on stage, performs the song, and then it goes to some sort of club music. World, you’re funny.

The seventeen-minute film Madonna is promoting is available as a torrent for free on BitTorrent. The description provided by Rolling Stone makes it sound like a failed art house movie, but hey: we haven’t seen it yet.

As to the Elliott Smith cover? It’s actually a pretty good interpretation, and apart from the fact that it’s on piano and features a brief piano solo, it’s a pretty faithful take of the song that made waves on the Good Will Hunting soundtrack. It’s just odd, because Madonna sang “Like a Virgin” and Elliott Smith sang the song that Richie Tenenbaum attempts to kill himself to. Nonetheless, check out the good (sincerely, it is) cover here after the break.
