SWOON: Katy Perry Debuts “Walking On Air”

Stop it, Katy. Your Prism previews are making it impossible for us to get excited about other fall pop albums.

After a short preview hit the net early last week, Katy Perry has made good on her promise to release a new song this morning by unleashing the full version of “Walking On Air.” The track, which is the third to premiere off her forthcoming album Prism, showcases a distinctly different sound than what we heard on either “Roar” or “Dark Horse.” This time around the focus is entirely on club life, with thumping bass, thick synth, and an incredibly simplistic chorus that will likely be used to market a number of products in the months to come. You can stream the song at the end of this post.

Just to be clear, “Walking On Air” is strictly being released as a promotional single at this point. No attempt to push it at radio or beyond will take place right now, but it may get airplay on a handful of stations with their ear to the internet. If Katy decides to release this track as an actual single I think she’d find a wealth of success at radio, but based on the imagery she’s released for the album so far I think she’s going for a more ‘grown up’ feel with her marketing efforts. This is more of a throwaway track than the others that have surfaced, but that doesn’t make it a bad song.

Prism arrives in stores October 22. We’re looking forward to this album in ways that would read more like the rants of an obsessive music consumer than any kind of journalistic stance, and plan on bringing every additional song premiere and album detail we can in the weeks leads up to the release. Comment below and let us know your thoughts on Katy’s latest.
