UTG PHOTOS & REVIEW: Rockstar Uproar Festival 2013

Under The Gun sent photographer, Derek Scancarelli, to the Rockstar Uproar Festival at the Nikon Theatre at Jones Beach on August 18, 2013.

Credit should be given where credit is deserved- this year’s Rockstar Uproar Festival was pretty damn cool. The lineup featured Alice in Chains, Jane’s Addiction, Coheed and Cambria and Circa Survive, a surprisingly well meshed group of bands. Although from different sub-genres and time periods the four bands had one thing in common. They all kicked ass.

Check out below the jump for some photos of the bands and a brief overview of the day.

Jane’s Addiction played a stunning performance as the iconic rockers took stage in the Jones Beach Amphitheatre. As Dave Navarro entered the stage with his cigarette lit, he used its strings as an ashtray to hold while he shredded. You could see Navarro going side stage to make out with a chick while he played. Needless to say, singer Perry Farrell performed with an energy and style definitive to his own sort of stage presence. He is a master of his craft.

During the band’s performance, you could see lingerie dressed dancers, sexually parading around the stage. They performed an interesting yet grotesque act as they were suspended in the air by metal hooks inserted into their backs. It was certainly a crowd shocker.

JANE’S ADDICTION

Although Alice in Chains performed without their beloved original members who’ve passed away (Layne Staley, Mike Starr), they still brought down the venue with a mass array of oversized LED screens. With over 10 screens, the graphics themselves were a performance, unlike an EDM show there was actually a rock band to accompany all the pretty lights and some instruments being played.

Circa Survive and Coheed and Cambria really held their own, playing in a venue much larger than I’d ever seen either of the bands perform in. During Circa Survives set, vocalist Anthony Green had to take a breather to tell his son to behave, who was having some fun in the crowd of the oceanfront venue.

On the second stages, one band really stood out- although it’s no surprise. Seattle’s Walking Papers, which features Duff McKagan (formerly of Guns N’ Roses/Velvet Revolver) on bass and the intelligently charismatic Jeff Angell, played an intimate performance, sending Angell into the crowd to participate with fans and cause a ruckus, risking life and limb in the process.
