Government Shutdown Prompts Kevin Devine To Debut “Fiscal Cliff”

Since the days of Vietnam and flower children, music has provided countless individuals with a platform through which to voice their disdain for various national happenings. Earlier this evening, Kevin Devine did just that by streaming “Fiscal Cliff,” the third song to be released off his upcoming album Bubblegum, in “cracked celebration” of the current government shutdown. You can stream and download the track here or after the jump.

From the opening riff, “Fiscal Cliff” is a roller coaster. Propelled forward by a spastic drum fill, the guitar work is gritty and unpredictable, and at times could pass for some long lost track off of Brand New’s Daisy, which makes sense, as the entire album was produced by none other than Jesse Lacey.

In addition, Devine shared his inspiration for the tune through a personal Facebook address, which also urged fans to put their own spin on the song:

“The song was written from a frustrated, thorny place, but also from a desire to leapfrog their obfuscating bullshit toward a more clear-eyed connection with each other, to transcend the (literal) nonsense. To that end: if this pushes you to react creatively, expressively: do it. Make a video, make a collage, write something. And feel free to share it with us.”

With the debut of the “Bubblegum” music video yesterday, “Fiscal Cliff” is the third track to be released off the singer-songwriter’s forthcoming album, which is set to drop at some point before the new year, though a specific release date has yet to be announced.

Only time will tell what kind of responses Devine’s call to arms will garner, but if you like what you hear, comment below and let us know!

The release date is October 15th in the US and October 14th in Europe (U.K. at least but I think it’s most of Europe as well) for both Bubblegum and Bulldozer.
