‘The Conjuring’ To Influence New ‘Spawn’ Film

Spawn is my favorite comic book series. It is quite fitting that Spawn related news is coming out in the month of October, but in my opinion, there is a serious lack of live-action Spawn material out there, and any news forwarding that goal is substantial. Of course, there was that 1997 film, which remains one of my favorite “bad” flicks, yet it left a lot to be desired for Spawn fans. If you find yourself yearning for quality Spawn material, please, check out the fantastic HBO animated series, which to date is still the best incarnation of Spawn around.

But, there is hope on the horizon. In a recent interview, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane has given his hopes for a budget, and tone, for a new Spawn film. Coming in at a moderate 10 million, McFarlane wants the film to be a “supernatural thriller” over an “Iron Man re-do…that’s not it,” he states. McFarlane compares his hopes to that of Rosemary’s Baby and The Omen, stating that those films had only one fantastical element, which was their singular supernatural focus, and that the rest “in the world was normal.” His wish is to take the film in a more dramatic light, leaving Spawn as an enigma, comparing it further to The Departed with a ghost.

To my extreme pleasure, McFarlane tops off the interview by stating that the new film should be enjoyed by fans of The Conjuring, a film that I loved, as did UTG. For now, Jamie Foxx has expressed extreme interest in the role, and has spoken with McFarlane himself. I, personally am ecstatic at the thought of a new Spawn film, though my individual taste would enjoy British actor Idris Elba, at the helm. But, who am I to complain? Where McFarlane wants to take the series is exactly where it needs to go.

In the meantime, enjoy one of the few good things about the 1997 film, below.
