Guillermo del Toro Writing ‘Pacific Rim 2’

Whether or not Legendary will be green-lighting the sequel to Pacific Rim is unknown, though writer/director Guillermo del Toro is continuing to work on the sequel to the well-received debut. “We are writing the sequel,” says del Toro. The original film grossed around 400 million dollars, while only costing around 200 million to make. Decent numbers for an original release, surely Legendary would have liked to see larger numbers to go directly into sequel production. Regardless, del Toro and company are continuing to work.

What is interesting about Pacific Rim is not how it did in its American markets, but its international ones. Getting up to around 100 million in the U.S., the film reached around three times that in overseas markets, most notably, China. What could this mean going forward? Who knows, though it doesn’t seem to phase del Toro, who has held this project close to heart since day one.

Personally, I enjoyed Pacific Rim. A film full of cheese-ball moments and fantastic visuals, it delivered as a fun, monstrous, escape from the mundane Monday. With sequel rumors spinning for a Kaiju/Jaeger hybrid entity, or Charlie Day’s character filling the void for a villain, color me interested.
