UTG’s 31 Days Of Halloween: ‘Army Of Darkness’

Of all the holidays celebrated worldwide, no single day is more loved by the UTG staff than Halloween. With the arrival of October, the time has finally come to begin rolling out a plethora of features and special announcements we have prepared in celebration of our favorite day, including the one you’re about to read.

31 Days Of Halloween is a recurring daily feature that will run throughout the month of October. The hope and goal of this column is to supply every UTG reader with a daily horror (or Halloween themed) movie recommendation that is guaranteed to amplify your All Hallows’ Eve festivities. We’ll be watching every film the day it’s featured, and we hope you’ll follow along at home. If you have a suggestion, contact us and we may include your favorite scarefest in an upcoming column!

Day 18: Army Of Darkness (1993)

Everyone has their own Halloween traditions. Some people always give out candy, some always watch every Halloween movie in the series, some people get into mischief throughout their neighborhood. For me, I only have one thing I HAVE to do every Halloween season: carve pumpkins. There has not been a year I can remember not carving a pumpkin and it just would not feel right if the 31st rolled around and there wasn’t a carved gourd outside of my residence. In more recent years a new component to the carving ritual has emerged. Now I HAVE to carve a pumpkin while doing something else: watching Army Of Darkness. It all started years ago when I carved an Ash Williams pumpkin and while the carving may have went mediocre the movie was a great success and shall forever be cemented into my yearly tradition.

"mediocre" may have been a bit generous.

“mediocre” may have been a bit generous.

If you do not think you know Army Of Darkness ,shut up, yes you do. Even if you have never seen it you probably have seen it. Guy with a chainsaw for a hand fighting zombies? That is Army Of Darkness. Overly macho male character that says things like, “This is my boomstick!” and “Hail to the king, baby.” Army Of Darkness. Is a character supposed to say a few magic words over an evil book or relic and they mess up, releasing evil all around? Army Of Fucking Darkness. This film is all around you whether you have seen it or not. Hell, the main character has even managed to work his way into the Marvel universe in the coolest way possible.

Told you.

Told you.

Army Of Darkness is a classic. It may be the best horror comedy ever made. If it was not part of your Halloween traditions before I hope it will be now. If nothing else, go watch it. It is a great way to lighten up a horror movie marathon to break up all the terror. In lieu of a trailer here are a few of the best quotes of the film, please enjoy and remember: Shop Smart, Shop S-Mart.
