UTG TV: Childish Gambino Plays A New Song, “Shadows,” in Cleveland

So my sister says “Jake, I really want to go see Childish Gambino play in Cleveland.”

“I just got off work, Sarah. Give me a minute, would you?”

I shower, do some stuff, and go to a bonfire with some co-workers. I get a text. “Jake, please. I really want to go and mom says I can’t unless you take me. I’ll pay.”

“Deal.”

Childish Gambino played Cleveland State University’s homecoming last night and while I’m told the student body didn’t vote for him, I’m most certainly glad he played. Everyone had a good time. It was a fantastic set.

He and his live band played through a fair lot of tunes spanning from his EP, LP, to his latest mixtape. He also played a new song for the first time (as far as YouTube is concerned).

The song is called “Shadows” and will appear on his forthcoming album, Because The Internet, due out this December. I recorded this on my iPhone 4s in a stadium, so you’ll have to deal with with the audio/visual issues that come with that. That said, it’s still listenable. Enjoy!

what’s that interlude he opens with?

  3. Jacob Tender says:

He introduced the songs as “Ghosts” and told the crowd to get amped. They started that intro, crowd got amped, he stopped, then played the actual new song. No saying whether or not that intro will appear on the record.

They did vote for him, actually. Macklemore was originally an option at the beginning of the poll, but a few days in they announced that he wouldn’t be able to play so votes for him couldn’t be counted, but people were allowed to revote. When the poll closed Childish had the most votes not counting Macklemore, who still had more from people who didn’t recast their vote.. There were about 6 other artists available to choose from, so he was the most popular chose for what was available.

    So… He was runner up.

His music was not made for a venue this size.
