For the past few years, Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy has released a series of cover EPs; he’s recorded songs by Morrissey, Shirley Collins and Sam Cooke, and his next venture involves English rock band The Kinks.
The EP, titled Colin Meloy Sings The Kinks is composed of five Kinks covers, including the well-known 1967 track “Waterloo Sunset.”
In an interview with NPR, Meloy stated that he chose to cover The Kinks from a stack of randomly selected vinyl.
“I drew five different records off my shelf at random and determined myself to cover one of those artists. They were: Nico, Quasi, Clannad, Kinks and Don Everly. Briefly flirted with the idea of Quasi – particularly the remarkable body of work of one Sam Coomes – but I found that his range is way too high for me. I’m not good on Gaelic so Clannad was out; Nico and Don Everly? Nah. So the Kinks it was!” Meloy said.
Colin Meloy Sings The Kinks will be available at shows on Meloy’s tour, his first solo endeavor in five years. You can view EP’s tracklisting and Meloy’s tour dates below.
