First ‘Mr. Peabody & Sherman’ Trailer Updates Classic Characters

You may be thinking to yourself right now, “Is this the same cartoon duo from those cartoon interludes the various adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle?” The answer, my friends, is yes. Sort of.

Following in the same steps as Garfield and The Smurfs, the iconic cartoon duo known as Mr. Peabody & Sherman will be hitting the big screen with an all-new, CGI 3D adventure in 2014. This will be the first film appearance from the duo in decades (not counting anything connected to the 2000 film The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle). You can view the first trailer below.

In the film, Mr. Peabody, the most accomplished dog in the world, and his mischievous boy Sherman, use their time machine – The Wabac (pronounced ‘way back’) – to go on the most outrageous adventures known to man or dog. But when Sherman takes The Wabac out for a joyride to impress his friend Penny, they accidently rip a hole in the universe, wreaking havoc on the most important events in world history. Before they forever alter the past, present and future, Mr. Peabody must come to their rescue, ultimately facing the most daunting challenge of any era: figuring out how to be a parent. Together, the time traveling trio will make their mark on history.

Ty Burrell (Modern Family) lends his voice to Mr. Peabody. His take is slightly more hip than the original, and just for comparison’s sake we include a clip of the classic cartoon below for your enjoyment. Other notable names lending their voices include Max Charles, Ariel Winter, Allison Janney, Stephen Colbert, Leslie Mann, Stanley Tucci, Patrick Warburton, Lake Bell, Zach Callison and Dennis Haysbert.

As much as I loved the original cartoon, there is something about this trailer that just doesn’t work for me. It may be my nostalgia for 2D animation quietly protested the CGI bastardization of beloved characters, but I honestly think there’s more (like mediocre character design). Comment below and let us know your first impressions of the trailer.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman arrives in theaters March 7.
