REVIEW: Sirens And Sailors – ‘Skeletons’

Artist: Sirens And Sailors
Album: Skeletons
Genre: Metalcore
Label: Artery Recordings / Razor & Tie

Sirens And Sailors have been one of my favorite unsigned metalcore acts for a long time, and before I knew it they were swooped up by a major record label and on the path to releasing their sophomore full length album. What really made me love their music was their EP, Wasteland. I had liked them before this, but that EP really made me appreciate their musicianship. With that in mind, I’ve had high expectations for their new album, Skeletons.

Skeletons opens up with a short instrumental intro, which quickly transitions into the first full track, “The Chosen One.” This track is just a small taste of what you can expect to hear on the album. The band shows off their guitar skills, though the song is more than just a bunch of breakdowns the entire time.

“Go For The Throat” is one of the first singles the band released for Skeletons, and it’s one of their most metal sounding tracks. This is one of the best songs on the album. My one complaint is that the clean vocalist doesn’t show off very much range. I know he’s capable of it because he flexes his vocal ability more on their older songs, but not on this album for some reason. The unclean vocalist boasts a great range throughout each track.

The band did a great job picking some of their best songs to release as singles. My favorite song is “Straightjacket.” This track has one of the best choruses, and it’s catchy as hell too. If you like this one song, it’s worth checking out the rest.

Now to talk about a song that hasn’t been released yet…How about two? “Exorcist” has the best intro of any other track. Listen for the guitars right at the beginning, you’ll know what I’m talking about. This is also one of the heavier songs, and it doesn’t contain any clean vocals except for some eerie ones in the background.

The album closes with the title track, which is the twelfth track on the album. While I don’t think this is the strongest song on the album, it’s a great one to end on. Near the end of the song the guitars start a killer riff, which carry through to the end of the song. The ending of this album is almost perfect.

What I like best about this album is the metal influence. While I do enjoy post hardcore or indie bands most of the time, it’s nice to break away from that and have something a little bit heavier, but not something super heavy.

This is an awesome album. Instead of just making a longer version of Wasteland, they took the best elements of that EP and crafted a fresh sound for fans. Sirens And Sailors successfully managed to craft a melodic, high energy metalcore album that’s enjoyable ’til the very last note.

SCORE: 8.5/10
