Legendary Musician Lou Reed Passes Away At 71

The world of rock and roll lost one of its most legendary and influential figures today in Lou Reed, who passed away at age seventy-one. The cause of his death has not been disclosed, but he had been experiencing health problems and underwent a liver transplant earlier this year.

Reed is best known for his role as the vocalist, guitarist, and main songwriter of the hugely influential (although, initially at least, commercially unsuccessful) band The Velvet Underground. Their 1967 debut, a collaboration with singer Nico, is often considered among the greatest rock albums ever made, and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

After his departure from the Velvet Underground in 1970, Reed went on to become a prolific solo artist. He is probably most well known for his 1972 hit “Walk On the Wild Side,” and while he never again achieved massive commercial success, his distinctive voice, guitar playing, and songwriting style will remain a major influence on alternative music for years to come.

Whether you’re a longtime fan or a newcomer to Reed’s music, give The Velvet Underground & Nico a spin today in his honor.
