2013 has seen Portugal. The Man go from well-loved to well-known, their indie-rock-meets-friendly-psych-pop sound catching the ears of a wider audience on their new album, Evil Friends. We’re not just talking about regular listeners, either. Danny Brown, Alt-J, and Passion Pit have all taken to remixing songs by Portugal. The Man, showing their love for the band. Now the Beastie Boys’ Mike D has tipped his hat, too, taking on “Modern Jesus” this time.
The song’s original spaciness and echoing bubbles are still there, but his reworking doubles up on the drumming and slips a few hip-hop snippets in. If you were letting your hand surf in the air outside your car window before, it’s now turned into a head nodding track (that still lets your hand roam in freedom).
