Pussy Riot Member Thought Missing, Russian Officials Respond

Over the course of the weekend, reports were coming in that imprisoned Pussy Riot member Nadya Tolokonnikova had gone missing, stemming from her family claiming that they had not heard from her since her recent prison transfer. Tolokonnikova’s father exclaimed, “No one knows anything,” saying that “There’s no proof she’s alive, we don’t know the state of her health. Is she sick? Has she been beaten?”

Now, Russian officials have responded to the curious nature of Tolokonnikova’s silence, claiming that her family will be informed of her status within ten days of her arrival to her new prison ordinance, as per Russian regulations. While I am not fully informed on Russian prison regulation, many are speculating that the move to transfer Tolokonnikova was to dampen her spirit, after she, and other inmates led hunger strikes, and protests, casting out against the living conditions of the prisons that hold them.

Tolokonnikova is currently serving a two year sentence for hooliganism, committed back in March of 2012, when she, and other Pussy Riot members led a guerrilla performance inside one of Moscow’s largest cathedrals. With her current whereabouts still unknown, it seems that the Russian government has up to ten days after transfer to inform the family of her location.
