UTG Crush: I Know The Chief

Fall may be in the air and the wind may speak of winter, but through music it’s still possible to feel joy that comes with summertime and today we have one hell of a song to share with all of you.

Rising from the remains of indie pop act Passport, I Know The Chief are a feel-good rock band from Melbourne who choose to describe their sound as “jungle disco.” Their latest single, “Stay Coloured,” blends the funk-laden pop sensibilities of the 70s pop with the ‘zero cares in the world’ appeal of 80s radio hits to create a dance floor sensation you won’t be able to resist. You can stream and download the song, for free, at the end of this post.

One of the biggest indie pop trends as of late has been to inject a throwback sound into the mix and that is exactly what has happened with “Stay Coloured.” The song builds like a modern EDM-influence jam then pedals back just enough to find a chill groove that just won’t quit and slowly-but-consistantly increases in complexity. By the time the bridge hits the song has turned into an all-out dance track (with actual instrumentation), but you’re none the wiser because the melody was so intoxicating you didn’t even notice the repetitious nature of the lyrics.

I Know The Chief may be a young group, but the talent displayed on “Stay Coloured” is good enough to rival any current indie radio outfit. We will be spinning this single for many weeks to come, and we’re willing to bet many of you will want to do the same. Click below, let go of your cares, and spend the next four minutes enjoying the dizzying euphoria of truly great pop music.
