Idris Elba Confirms He Was In Talks For ‘Luke Cage’

Although development has now halted on the proposed Luke Cage Marvel film adaptation, British actor Idris Elba has confirmed that he did in fact speak with Marvel about playing the character.

“There was talk about Luke Cage at one time — I thought Luke Cage was a pretty interesting character,” says Elba, “They were going to do it, but I don’t know what happened.” Well, we now know at least that the character will be developed into a Netflix series, though it doesn’t seem that Elba will be involved.

Elba also shot down rumors that he was in talks for Jurassic World, and stated that being approached for James Bond would be “the will of a nation,” though there has been a high calling by fans for Elba to play the role. While current Bond actor Daniel Craig has many years left in the role, how awesome would it be to see Elba as 007?

There seems to be plenty of Elba rumors running around, and I wish at least some of them were true. Elba is a fantastic actor, and if you have not seen, or heard, of his BBC series Luther, you need to check that out immediately (it’s currently streaming on Netflix so there really is no excuse). There were also talks way back when there was a calling for a new doctor in Doctor Who, for Elba to helm the sonic screwdriver. Since there has yet to be a black Doctor, I would have loved to see Elba in that role, though I am sure Peter Capaldi will do just fine. 13th Doctor, maybe?

While a seemingly underused actor in American audiences (with the exception of The Wire), you can catch Elba as Heimdall in Thor: The Dark World.
