Though principal photography for Mad Max: Fury Road wrapped in 2012, this photo of Tom Hardy to the left is really all we have to show for it. But alas, Warner Bros. has finally set a May 15, 2015 release date (in 3D) for writer/director George Miller’s fourth go-round with the character. That date gives the film a two-week buffer after the May 1 release of The Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015’s loaded summer slate.
Hardy takes over the title role made famous by Mel Gibson 34 years ago. The film has experienced a troubled production, to say the least. Their six-month shoot was delayed an entire year after heavy rainfall in 2011 turned their Australian post-apocalyptic wasteland into a flower garden. Even now, the film is preparing to move into three weeks of additional shooting beginning this week.
In most cases, such a hellacious production would leave me wary of a film living up to expectations. But with Miller returning and surrounding Hardy with talented actors like Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult, I’m left with a glimmer of hope that Fury Road could be worth the wait. Mark your calendars, and I guess we’ll find out together.
