UTG PHOTOS: Reel Big Fish & Goldfinger (11/13/13)

Under The Gun sent photographer, Derek Scancarelli, to the Don’t Stop Skankin’ Tour at The Paramount in Huntington, NY.

I attended my first concert in 2002 — ever since I’ve been dying to see Goldfinger. Come on, everyone has at least one ska period in their life. The concert was a great show and I was pumped to see Reel Big Fish for the hundredth time; it never gets old.

Unfortunately, I had some prior obligations so I wasn’t able to snap any photos of the opening bands, although I heard they put on a rather good performance.

The most shocking and entertaining part of watching Goldfinger perform was by far frontman John Feldmann. At 46 years old, the man kicks more ass than most guys who take the stage. He doesn’t have that out of touch vibe that some older guys have performing upbeat ska and punk songs. Playing bass was none other than MxPx’s Mike Herrera, who Feldmann was certainly proud to share the stage with. At the end of Goldfinger’s performance, they urged all the fans who knew the words to come on stage with them, much to the security guards’ worry. Feldmann could be seen conducting a massive crowd of people sing a punk song like it was an orchestra. When “99 Red Balloons” came on, I had the urge to run into the crowd like I used to. Everyone collapsed and I was in a pile up, thank God I had a buddy hold my camera.

When Reel Big Fish took the stage, half the audience was boozed up and the rest were just amped and ready to go. Reel Big Fish played a lengthy set including newer songs all the way back to tracks like “Thank You For Not Moshing” off of Why Do They Rock So Hard?. It was a pleasure to interview Ryland (drums) and Derek (bass) over the summer at Warped Tour — I wonder if they’ve gotten a chance to play in zero gravity yet…

Check out below to see photographs from the show. You don’t want to miss Goldfinger’s massive stage choir.
