STAND-UP TUESDAYS: Mike Birbiglia

Stand-Up Tuesdays is a weekly comedy spotlight written by the wonderfully talented Angie Frissore. Covering both known and unknown comics, Stand-up Tuesdays is your new source for all things funny.

This week, Angie puts a spotlight on Mike Birbiglia’s comedy career. If you or your comedy troupe would like to be featured on Stand-Up Tuesdays, please email utgjames@gmail.com.

Mike Birbiglia‘s new special, My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend, is an absolutely enchanting and honest journey through the comedian’s experiences with love that is as touching as it is hilarious. Released today via New Wave Dynamics, My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend is the perfect mix of stand up and storytelling one might expect from the award-winning performer.

Filmed at the Intiman Theater in Seattle, Washington, Birbiglia takes his audience on an exceptionally engaging trip down his romantic memory lane – stopping every now and then to share a painfully awkward and funny story of failed adolescent love. Birbiglia isn’t an alpha male by any means, and most of his audience can certainly empathize as he confesses to finding out he was a terrible kisser in seventh grade, or throwing up on a carnival ride while trying to impress a girl.

My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend pulls you in from the start, and with Birbiglia’s easy-going stage presence and impeccable storytelling skill, he will have you hanging on every last word. Birbiglia’s ability to connect the tiniest of details throughout several layers of stories is remarkable, ultimately bringing his stories together in a surprisingly moving conclusion that left me with a feeling I can’t say I’ve often had listening to a comedy special.

Find out for yourself why My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend sold out eighty-one performances at the Barrow Street Theater in New York City by picking up a copy today – and get something a little deeper out of comedy.
