New ‘Rio 2’ Trailer Promises Many More Blue Macaws

Before we dive into this trailer, here’s a quick recap of what some of you may have missed in the original Rio. The first film told the story of Blu (Jesse Eisenberg), a sheltered blue macaw from Minnesota, falling in love with the wild and free Jewel (Anne Hathaway). Along the way the two were informed they were the only two of their species left, which gave them all the reason in the world to fall in love (lest their species be wiped from the earth forever). It was cute, but nothing we felt warranted a sequel.

In Rio 2 viewers will learn that there are in fact many blue macaws remaining on earth. Tulio (Rodrigo Santoro), the ornithologist from the original, discovers a large community of the species living deep in the jungle and shortly thereafter our main characters set off on a journey to find what’s others like themselves. Once they arrive, however, a whole new slew of problems present themselves. You can view the latest trailer below:

The first Rio did very little for me, but i have to admit there are moments in this trailer too cute to deny. I’m still not sure there is enough material to keep things moving for a full feature, but I am interested in seeing more. Do you agree? Comment at the end of this post and let us know.

Rio 2 opens April 11, 2014. In addition to the previously named stars, Andy Garcia, Bruno Mars, Leslie Mann, George Lopez, Jamie Foxx, will.i.am, Tracy Morgan, Kristin Chenoweth, Janelle Monáe, Jemaine Clement, and Rita Moreno are also amongst the voice cast.
