Watch Iron & Wine, Calexico, Glen Hansard, and Kathleen Edwards Cover The Pogues’ “Fairytale of New York” on ‘Jimmy Fallon’

Holiday cheer is among us and the snow is beginning to fall. As with any overly-merry time of year, there are plenty of scrooges scattered about to complain about it all. Well several of the music industry’s big names decided to perform a tongue-in-cheek classic on Jimmy Fallon… and it was actually really, really good.

WFUV’s Holiday Cheer concert at NYC’s Beacon Theatre this past Tuesday was hosted by Iron & Wine’s Sam Beam and Calexico acted as the house band. The performers eventually were joined by Glen Hansard and Kathleen Edwards onstage. In a couple of hours, the group shifted locations that evening, later endeding up onstage at Late Night with Jimmy Fallon instead of the Beacon Theatre. They launched into The Pogues’ Christmas classic “Fairytale of New York,” and I think everyone in the audience was surprised at how well it turned out. We’re talking spot-on accents, warm swells of bells ringing out for Christmas day, and, of course, stubborn swears. Ah, Christmas with the ones you love.
