SINGLE REVIEW: G-Eazy – “Almost Famous”

Artist: G-Eazy
Single: “Almost Famous”
Genre: Hip-hop
Label: None

Only a few weeks have passed since G-Eazy delivered his last single, but earlier this week fans got another dose of new music when the California native delivered a video and mp3 titled “Almost Famous.”

Featuring production that brings to mind the mood set on tracks like “Been On” and “Far Alone,” the latest from G-Eazy continues his rise to the top with a smooth hook and bars that are ripe with thoughts about the future. G knows he’s never been in a better position to skyrocket to the next level of celebrity, but instead of making a quick grab for attention using what’s trendy (like so many tend to do) he is sticking to the sound that gave him his start and taking the fame in stride. He’s still living for the moment, sure, but his goal in this life is to have a career that is much more than flash-in-the-pan success. He’s in this for the long haul, and on this track G let’s fans know he plans to keep on keeping on whether or not he’s as popular in 2014 as he is right now.

As with every G-Eazy track as of late, ego takes center throughout “Almost Famous.” What separate G’s lines from every other rapper trying to sound like the greatest out right now is that everything G says can be backed up with a few simple searches on Google. He’s created mix tapes that play like albums, toured with the biggest names in hip-hop, and earned a place on essentially every list of ‘rappers you need to know’ released in the last two years. His time in the spotlight is now, and for the foreseeable future G’s going to let you know why he deserves all the praise and recognition that has come his way. Some may find this repetitive, but if you take a closer look at the stories being told you’ll see it’s not repetitive storytelling as much as it is cohesive. G is creating a narrative through tracks like “Almost Famous,” and in doing so sharing his perspective on reality with fans. Right now his perspective is that he is ‘the man of the hour,’ and that’s the voice we hear when listening to “Almost Famous.”

The video for “Almost Famous,” which also debuted this week, delivers the message of the track with creative visuals that linger in the mind long after the beat has faded to silence. I know this is a review of the song itself, but the clip is too good to not earn a mention when discussing this track.

It’s hard to know just what to make of G-Eazy’s release schedule right now. In the past, each release coincided with a new mixtape, but at this point we do not know if“Almost Famous” and the song that came before it (“Far Alone”) will make Eazy’s new album (These Things Happen). Both tracks were released for free, as well as on iTunes, so until a track list for These Things Happen arrives I don’t think anyone can guess what G has planned next. He’s clearly building towards something, and though we may not see the full picture just yet the songs we have heard are quite special.

In case there were ever any doubts, “Almost Famous” should be all the convincing anyone needs to realize 2014 will be the year of G-Eazy. Get familiar.
