’47 Ronin’ To Be One Of The Biggest Flops Of 2013

The 3D samurai action film 47 Ronin is on track to become one of the biggest box office failures of the year after taking in only $3.4 million on its opening weekend in the United States. Around the globe 47 Ronin made around $10 million total between thirteen other territories which is miles away from its nearly $200 million budget.

For those unfamiliar with the film (and judging by those numbers that is most people), 47 Ronin is a fictional retelling of the legendary real life 47 Ronin, a group of 18th century Japanese samurai who set out to avenge their masters before taking their own lives. The story is as important in Japanese culture as The Battle of the Alamo is in the United States and has been told in various formats ranging from plays to other films over the years.

In order to offset their losses, Universal Studios has written down some of 47 Ronin‘s production costs in the past quarter instead of the usual procedure which would put all of the expense in the current quarter. This spreads the loss over more time which makes it seem less overall for the stockholders.

Although 47 Ronin performed so poorly in the United States (and even worse in Japan) the film still took the top box office slots in Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. Unfortunately unless it miraculously sells out every showing today and tomorrow it looks like Keanu has a new reason to be sad.

I enjoyed it. I think in this very media driven culture with elitist movie reviewers (not anyone at :) UTG) gaining more mainstream readers, it has become difficult for the average moviegoer to just go to a movie they are interested in and just see for themselves. It was not an amazing movie, but simply a decent story with some fun action.
