Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones got off to a hot start on Friday, but the family dollar once again prevailed as Frozen pulled off the come-from-behind victory at this weekend’s box office. The Marked Ones‘ $8.7 million opening day gave it a $2 million head start over the animated Disney feature, but the front-loaded horror flick quickly tapered off as Frozen held strong to pull in a total of $20.7 million for the 3-day victory. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, the weekend’s lone new wide release ended up with $18.2 million for a second place finish.
The win marks Frozen‘s second weekend at the top spot, but first since December 6-8. It’s also the third best sixth weekend in box office history behind Titanic and Avatar, two movies you may have heard of. Since opening on November 22, the film has grossed $297 million domestically and a total of $639 worldwide. Simply put, Frozen is a juggernaut.
The Paranormal Activity number puts it more than $10 million behind the opening weekend of Paranormal Activity 4, but it’s tough to say if that’s a result of franchise fatigue, the spin-off angle giving audiences less urgency to see it, or if it’s a product of the film being released in January as opposed to Halloween weekend. It’s probably a combination of the three, but I guess we’ll find out later this year when Paranormal Activity 5 hits theaters in October.
Further down the list, The Wolf Of Wall Street was a surprisingly strong holdover in its second weekend, dropping only 26.7% to $13.4 million despite its lackluster “C” Cinemascore. Check out the full listing of box office numbers after the jump.
