Rumor: Marvel Wants Johnny Depp For ‘Doctor Strange’

Hold on to your keyboards, comic book fans. The internet is bound to have a heyday with this one.

Latino Review, who have a good-but-not-flawless record with cool movie scoops, are reporting that Marvel wants Johnny Depp to take on the role of ‘Doctor Strange.’ The studio allegedly met with the Pirates Of The Caribbean star recently to discuss the character, who has long been rumored to be in line for ‘phase three’ Marvel film, but at this time neither Marvel or Depp have confirmed the story.

Doctor Strange, for those unaware, is a former neurosurgeon, a practicing sorcerer, and serves as the Sorcerer Supreme — the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. He originally debuted during the ‘silver age’ of comics (1956-1973) and has been described as “the mightiest magician in the cosmos.”

Given the relationship Depp has with Disney and the fact Disney now owns Marvel it’s not hard to believe there may be some truth to this story. Aside from the epic failure that was The Lone Ranger, Depp has essentially been a money-printing machine for the house that Mickey built over the last decade. Bringing him into the Marvel universe, which is itself a money-printing machine, seems like a fairly obvious decision.

My biggest fear with Depp entering the Marvel fold is whether or not he will choose to bring his ‘every character is a little bit wacky’ approach to the portrayal of Doctor Strange. I still believe Depp has it in him to deliver a more sincere performance than his last 5-10 films have displayed, but whether that is indeed the case remains to be seen.
