Foster The People made fans go a little crazy yesterday with the announcement of the details for their sophomore studio album, Supermodel. They even kicked it off with the premiere of the very first single from the album, which is titled “Coming Of Age.”

Almost three years will have passed since the release of the band’s debut album by the time Supermodel comes out, and fans are already wondering whether or not that span of time will that have a n impact on the group’s sound. Foster The People are known for their fast laid back, upbeat music that blends distorted vocals with synth and pop. The band has indicated that they have drawn inspiration from The Clash, The Kinks, West African music and David Bowie. When you first listen to “Coming Of Age,” you will immediately get the sense of 80’s influence. If any song has a specific influence you could tie to it, it would be this one and that influence is certainly David Bowie. This isn’t a bad thing. With the rise of Arcade Fire, there have been a plethora of millennials scrambling to pick up his music over the last decade.

“Coming Of Age” works because it is simple. It has a memorable melody and the chorus is something that will get stuck in your head for days. This song easily has a draw for both younger and older fans, as it ties in many elements that people crave with a sound listeners already love. Their older audience may feel a sense of nostalgia, and it will also satisfy the younger generation’s desire for music hailing back to the classics.

Considering the fact their proclaimed influences cover a wide variety of genres, it’ll be interesting to see what else comes out of the woodwork on Supermodel. If any of the songs sound anything like this one though, I suspect these guys will easily claim another Grammy nomination (or two).
