STAND UP TUESDAYS: Dave Konig

Stand-Up Tuesdays is a weekly comedy spotlight written by the wonderfully talented Angie Frissore. Covering both known and unknown comics, Stand-up Tuesdays is your new source for all things funny.

This week, Angie puts a spotlight on Dave Konig’s comedy career. If you or your comedy troupe would like to be featured on Stand-Up Tuesdays, please email utgjames@gmail.com.

In an industry dominated by the rise of geek culture and alternative comedy, sometimes it’s refreshing to listen to a comedian whose act is almost a throw-back to comedy’s glory days. In this week’s Stand Up Tuesdays, we take a look at the latest release from Next Round Entertainment, comedian Dave Konig’s new CD, “Your Face is Crooked.”

With a stage presence reminiscent of Rodney Dangerfield, Konig’s performance focuses less on self-deprecation and lengthy stories and is much more of a rapidly-paced, comedic firing squad of sorts. Riffing on air travel, online college, and life as the only Jew in his family, Konig’s set keeps you laughing from start to finish.

“I told them to turn the TV off. When I left the room I swear I heard one of them say, ‘See? I told you they control the media!’” Konig quips about his Catholic-raised children.

A three-time Emmy Award winning television host and comedian, Konig is known for hosting the infamous late-night comedy series “Hardcore TV” and the cult hit talk show parody, “The Dave Konig Show” for USA Network. He has also been featured on NBC’s “Law and Order: Criminal Intent”, HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” and NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice”.

Konig possesses a great deal of variety in his material, resulting in a well-engaged audience that clearly delights in the experience. One note of caution, however, to comedians planning on recording a CD – be wary of who is sitting too close to the microphone. As delightful as Konig’s performance is, the almost-constant presence of a very Fran Drescher-like laugher does take away from the experience a bit. At one point early on, an audience member, whom I can only assume is the same person, shouts out something to add to Konig’s joke. Ever the consummate professional, Konig simply replies, “Tonight’s about me, not you.”
