EXCLUSIVE DETAILS: Meet Jonny Craig’s New Band

Jonny Craig 9.30 6

When we interviewed Jonny Craig on tour last October, the singer mentioned that after releasing his latest solo effort, he would be working his way back into some more rock-type material. He’s been quiet on that front for a while, with no indication of what that meant. Now we’re getting a glimpse of what he was talking about.

Jonny Craig has a new band. The name of the project has yet to reveal itself, but the roster has been filled. Meet the group.

  • Jonny Craig – singer
  • Alex Lyman (Hearts & Hands) – guitar
  • Christopher Kim (Hearts & Hands) –  guitar
  • Tai Wright (Four Letter Lie, D.R.U.G.S.) – drums
  • Jason Mays – guitar
  • Colin Vieira (Musical Charis) – bass

We talked to Tai Wright briefly about the project.

UTG: It’s good to see you back on the kit. What’s the road looking like for the band? Are you writing or recording anytime soon?

TW: There is a large chunk of material written. We’re just weeding through it and fine tuning. Everything we have is pre vocals.

Do you have any producers in mind?

Yes. We’ll be working with Kris Crummett in the studio.

So there’s no label support?

None as far as I know. Eric Rushing is directly involved with Jonny but as far as [the band] goes I’m not sure.

How did it all come together? Did Jonny hook everyone up or did someone come to him?

As far as me personally, Jonny have been talking about collaborating since the 2012 Allstars tour when he was with [Dance Gavin Dance]. I think the Souls On Fire tour is where he and Lyman  hooked up and got to talking. He sent me the material, Lyman revised it after we listened to it, and then we got everyone on board once we had a solid body of material to go off of.

Jonny and I are going back and forth on the name, art direction, and future plans. I’ll be on the Savages Tour with him, playing drums for his solo material. Were excited! We’ve got big plans for summer.

Can we get a name?

That we can’t release yet. We’re actually not 100% on one yet, either.

Fair enough. Thanks for the chat. Good luck!

It’s pretty obvious things are still getting worked out, but I’d imagine there is some public material on the horizon available now. Check out a clip from Jonny’s Instagram below and stay tuned for more info.
