We knew B.J. Novak was in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 for some time now, but his official role has been kept a secret, until today that is. Thanks to a tweet from director Marc Webb, we now can safely say that The Office vet will be portraying Alistair Smythe in the Spidey sequel.

Smythe, who is also known as the Ultimate Spider Slayer, is the son of Spencer Smythe, a scientist who creates the Spider Slayer robots with the one goal of killing Spidey. As canon goes, Spencer falls at the hands of his own creations, and Alistair takes over the Spidey killing mantle.

We do not know how prominent Novak’s role as Smythe will be in the film, though we surely know that the sequel is stacked with a massive rogues gallery (with plenty of nods to a Sinister Six arrival in the future). Recalling an earlier tweet from Webb’s Twitter account, he stated “Day 38. A supposed rumor about a Dunder-Mifflin takeover of Oscorp?” So at least we know that Smythe will be seen at Oscorp in some fashion.
