Justin Vernon and The Roots might not seem like an obvious combination at first, but don’t let appearances fool you. The man behind Bon Iver is a self-professed hip hop fan and even recorded a yet-to-be-released collaboration with rapper Astronautalis. With that in mind, it’s not so strange to see Vernon teaming up with one of the genre’s most important groups for a performance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.
Together, The Roots and Vernon tackled “Holocene,” one of the highlights from Bon Iver’s self-titled album, released in 2011. With a tight groove, bubbling bass line, and Vernon’s use of a vocoder, this version is a new twist on the majestic beauty of the original, it’s worth a listen for fans of either artist.
