Peter Buck To Release Boldly Titled New Album February 18

Once you reach a certain point in your career as a musician, you can effectively do whatever you want with your art and not worry too much about the ramifications. You can release a album exclusively on an outmoded format, you can do it without any interviews or press releases, and, if you’re really feeling bold, you can call it I Am Back To Blow Your Mind Once Again.

Peter Buck is at that point in his career.

The R.E.M. guitarist’s impressively titled solo effort is due out next Tuesday, February 18, via Mississippi Records, who will issue it on vinyl only. While Buck is certainly going about the process of releasing the album in a nontraditional way, it is refreshing to see an artist let his art stand on its own without any of the trappings of a normal release cycle. In an open letter posted to R.E.M.’s website, Buck wrote, “I am doing exactly what I love in exactly the way I want to do it.” What more could you ask of an artist?
