UTG INTERVIEW: Gemini Wired

Kristian Bryant, also known as Boston hip-hop artist Gemini Wired, initially burst into the scene in 2013 with new music, most notably her anti-bullying-themed track “What Now” and its accompanying music video.

For 2014, Gemini Wired is hard at work on her debut effort which could materialize in the form of an EP or a full-length if circumstances allow.

Recently, Bryant took the time to speak with us about what she’s been working on and the importance of her message delivered in “What Now,” so read through the break and get acquainted with this New England up-and-comer.

When you were young, was music prominent in your home at all? What do you feel initially inspired you to want to get involved with music?

Music was most definitely prominent in my household growing up. My mom would blast music especially on the weekends when we did our chores. Me, my mom and siblings would sing, dance, and act a fool together. It was when I started doing choir in elementary school when I started to dream about becoming a singing superstar. I felt so complete when I was up on stage in front of an audience. After the first adrenaline rush from performing I was hooked!

You had tried out other hobbies and such at a young age too, so what was it about music that made you decide that that’s the path you wanted to follow?

I’ve just always been a music lover and have music in my heart. When I’m making music I get to say whatever I want however I want and I enjoy that so much! Plus I get to be brutally honest in my music and no one gets to cut me off or interrupt me! I didn’t really have that freedom with other things I tried.

Most recently, you’ve been focusing your efforts on your anti-bullying campaign coinciding with the release of your video for “What Now.” You’ve stated that you’ve been bullied in the past as well, were there any specific events that led to you wanting to draw attention to this?

That’s a great question actually. There were a few different incidents but the video for my song “What Now” was my own experience. I tried to befriend a group of girls that wasn’t interested in my friendship in return. I did well in school and one of the girls found out I was tutoring a really popular guy and that’s where it all started. I don’t want give too much of the concept away but it’s definitely not the kind of thing you forget which inspired the video treatment. Another situation I can remember was trying out for a local basketball team at the YMCA. I remember being called all sorts of names being I was the only girl that tried out. I ended up making the team but obviously they weren’t very welcoming. On a positive note, it did make me the motivated person I am today so I have no regrets.

To someone that hasn’t seen the video yet, what would you say the main message of it is?

Good question because the song isn’t really about being bullied, the lyrics are more to inspire. I’m singing about not letting anything get in your way or pull back, and who better than a bully to say that to? That’s exactly what they do. They try to stop their victims by violence and hurtful words and I want this song and video to encourage them to take a stand.

Is “What Now” serving only as a stand-alone single, or will it be on an upcoming release? You’re working on an EP currently, right?

I wouldn’t call this a single since I believe singles are really determined by the fans nowadays once you put your music out. However, this is definitely part of my project. It may be a full album since I’m constantly working around the clock on new music with my production team. Plus reception always plays a part in releasing music with Lyve City.

So as far as the campaign, what all do you hope to do and accomplish with this project as far as anti-bullying?

I’m just looking to get my message to everyone. I think sometimes people automatically think adults can’t be bullied but it’s the opposite. What I do is for everyone. But I think because of what we see in society, usually in schools, it translates easier to kids and teens. More importantly and honestly I’m also just looking to be heard as an artist. This anti-bullying campaign for “What Now” is just as important as the rest of the music I’ll be releasing which is never the same. I would never want to limit myself to one genre. Just expect the unexpected!

So beyond the anti-bullying themes, what can we expect to hear on your EP in terms of sound and lyrical content?

My music will be well-rounded because I’m a diverse artist. My content is from the heart and or sometimes just a conversation I want to have for my fans. Anything from love, heartache, to dance music since I’m obviously a fan of music. It’s really just music to break stereotypes, or just plain have fun music. Again, I try to just let it flow when creating and put it out for the world to see and hear. I want to give people something to remember for a long time or for years to come.

Do you have plans to tour in support of the release?

No plans to tour just yet since I’m so busy with music but that will certainly come in time. My fans can always follow me on Facebook and Twitter.

What can you tell us about Lyve City and your involvement with that?

Lyve City is my production team that I’ve been working with for a few years now. They have helped me develop my sound so much. Before I started working with Lyve City, I was doing music on my own and I wasn’t really sure of which direction to go with my music. They are two extremely gifted and talented individuals — they’re dope!

What artists, past or present, do you feel have influenced your sound and style? Any particular musicians that you admire or idolize?

I have been influenced by Missy, Lauren Hill, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Beyonce, just to name a few. These women are just so incredibly talented and paved the way for many artists we see today. I would have to admit that I stand for Beyonce though! I really dig her music, her work ethic, and her humbleness.

What is the rest of 2014 looking like for you? Any specific plans or goals you hope to achieve?

2014 is starting off strong and I want it to end strong. My goal is to really make some noise in the music scene with my songs. I plan on finishing and releasing my EP in a few months too. I’m going to continue to work hard and to make the music that I’m passionate about. So much to do this year but I’m excited!
