Album Stream: St. Vincent – ‘St. Vincent’

11:02 p.m. seems an odd time for so big an album stream to go up. I doubt there will be any complaining, though – St. Vincent‘s self-titled fourth full-length is beyond “highly anticipated.” The critically adored purveyor of pop weirdness and big, fuzzy riffs is on the rise, and this album cycle looks to amp up the buzz to deafening levels.

There’s the white hair, the from-the-future, queen-on-her-thrown cover, the live tics. They all have “plastic-smile creepiness,” as Linsay Zoladz put it so accurately on Pitchfork. These things together in the video for “Digital Witness” and various live performances, which visibly underline that there is a specific persona and concept here. It’s a combination that, if not as fully fleshed out as Janelle Monáe’s Cindi Mayweather, certainly calls her to mind with its similar use of iconic imagery.

The album is streaming via NPR’s First Listen. Sit back and enjoy the singularly weird experience it is. St. Vincent comes out February 25 on Loma Vista. Pre-order it here.
