‘Slumdog Millionaire’ And ‘127 Hours’ Trio Reuniting For Billy Jean King Biopic

Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle, writer Simon Beaufoy, and producer Christian Colson are reteaming to tackle a biopic of tennis legend Billie Jean King.

As reported by Page Six, the film will focus on King’s landmark 1973 “Battle of the Sexes” match against Bobby Riggs. Boyle unexpectedly attended a London screening of a King documentary last year and spoke with King afterwards. They’re meeting with King to discuss the script now in New York. After that, King will head to Sochi as one of the many openly gay members of the presidential delegation to the closing ceremony of the Olympics – a fact she thinks is likely a statement.

It will be interesting to see how Boyle tackles the legendary King victory, which has always been surrounded by controversy. Regardless, we’ve seen Boyle tackle an inspiring biopic well before. Boyle is also working on the Trainspotting sequel Porno, and his police procedural TV series Babylon is set to run later this year after airing its pilot on February 9.

Boyle is a director known for being partial to past collaborators, so the return of Beaufoy and Coulson is no surprise. Beaufoy worked on the screenplay for both Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours, and Colson has produced all three of Boyle’s recent films (including Trance). It’s worth noting that the one recent film Beaufoy did not work on, Trance, is the only one that was not based on an existing work or life.
