Reunited Failure Tapped to Open Tool’s March Tour

Say what you will about Tool’s lack of urgency to release a follow-up to 2006’s 10,000 Days, the band continues to string together a small run of tour dates nearly every year and they’ve yet to disappoint when it comes to choosing an opening act.

Over the course of their career, Tool has hand-picked everyone from Meshuggah to The Flaming Lips to Russian Circles to open for them, and their quickly approaching March arena run will be no different with recently reunited alt-rock outfit Failure set to kick off the majority of the dates. The move isn’t necessarily a surprising one, as Failure has a number of connections with Tool dating back to the early ’90s.

Failure was an active band from 1990 to 1997. During that time, they opened a number of tours for Tool including Lollapalooza 1997. A Perfect Circle also covered Failure’s “The Nurse Who Loved Me” on their Thirteenth Step album, while Failure had previously announced they would join A Perfect Circle and Puscifer for two shows celebrating Maynard James Keenan’s 50th birthday at L.A.’s Greek Theater on May 10-11.

Failure kicked off their reunion with a return show on February 13 at L.A.’s El Rey Theater and are expected to announce their own headlining run later this spring. If you’re unfamiliar with the band, you’d be doing yourself a favor to carve out some time to listen to their seminal album Fantastic Planet today.

Here’s what Failure’s Ken Andrews had to say about the pairing:

“Looking forward to hanging with my old mates, but more importantly, it’s a chance for people to hear two bands that still really care about the long form album format and what you can do that amount of time artistically, versus three-and-a-half minute singles.”
