Did Lil Jon Just Release The Best Music Video Of 2014?

Lil Jon may not have topped the charts in recent years like he did in the mid-2000s, but that does not mean the man who brought crunk to the masses has stopped making music. In fact, he’s been preparing a major return to the national spotlight, and this week he kicked things off in a big way by releasing an absolutely insane song and video you won’t soon forget.

Titled “Turn Down For What,” the latest from Lil Jon partners the hitmaker with DJ Snake for a club anthem that combines the outrageous tendencies of Jon’s delivery with bass-and-glitch heavy EDM. It’s not exactly a breath of fresh air musically, but it’s unique enough to stand out against pretty much anything at radio right now. The real treat, however, is the official video. Check it out:

The best music videos often have very little to do with the music they accompany, and that is sort of what makes “Turn Down For What” such a great visual offering. The track is clearly intended for club play, but here viewers are given a dilapidated apartment complex filled with sweaty people who are most likely not models that have essentially become possessed by the power of crazy music. They’re EDM zombies, thrusting and twerking to the beat without a care for what stands in their way, and though it’s a bit off-putting at first it quickly evolves into the type of clip you find impossible to not watch at least a second time.

Can Lil Jon return to the heights of pop music superstardom he found around the time “Yeah” was topping the charts? I’m not sure. He can, however, prove himself to be an extremely innovative and continually fascinating artist if there is more material like “Turn Down For What” in the future.
