It doesn’t get much cooler than this. Following the legendary grunge band’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame yesterday, the surviving members of Nirvana (drummer Dave Grohl, bassist Krist Novoselic, and guitarist Pat Smear) reunited at St. Vitus in Brooklyn, New York for an intimate, invite-only set of Nirvana songs. Those stepping up to fill late frontman Kurt Cobain’s spot included Joan Jett, St. Vincent, Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis, and Sonic Youth member Kim Gordon. You can check out a couple video clips from the show featuring Jett and St. Vincent performing “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Heart Shaped Box,” respectively, after the break.
According to Noisey writer Fred Passaro’s review, the band played a sixteen-song setlist filled with hits as well as a few deep cuts.
Of course, the rest of the day’s festivities were a big deal as well. Nirvana was inducted into the Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility, and you can watch an emotional acceptance speech from the band members and Courtney Love after the break as well. Their induction class also included the likes of Kiss, Peter Gabriel, The E Street Band, and more.
