Channing Tatum Has Met With Producers About Playing Gambit In Future ‘X-Men’ Films

This is the kind of story that will either fill you with excitement or send chills down your spine. For us, it’s the former, but for many it’s likely the latter. To those of you picking chills, all I can say is – get over it. Studios need star power to ensure box office draw, and it does not get much bigger right now than Channing Tatum. Cross your fingers he does not bastardize your childhood and hope for the best. It is all you can do.

Channing Tatum revealed during an interview with MTV that he has met with producers about possibly portraying the mutant known as Gambit in future installments of the X-Men franchise. He mentioned Lauren Shuler Donner by name and added that he has already started practicing an accent. His full quote reads:

“I met with Lauren Shuler Donner. And I would love it. Gambit is really the only X-Man I’ve ever loved. I mean I’ve loved them all, they’re all great, but I guess from being down south – my dad’s from Louisiana, I’m from Mississippi, Alabama, Florida – I don’t know. I just related to him. He’s just kind of suave… He’s the most un X-Men X-Man that’s ever been in X-Men. Other than maybe Wolverine, who’s like the anti-hero. He’s a thief. He’s not even a hero. He’s kind of walking the line of grey…He loves women and drinking and smoking and stuff so he’s just a cool guy who happens to have a moral center….I hope it [comes together]. You never know it’s a weird industry. If the stars align, I would die to play it. I’m already working on the accent. It’s crappy at the moment.”

You can view a video of the interview at the end of this post.

This is not the first time Channing Tatum has been mentioned in relation to Gambit. Shuler Donner previously told members of the press she would like to make a Gambit-centric film with Tatum at the center, but it is not clear at this point whether or not the potential for the project to come to life exists.

Gambit, for those unaware, is a mutant who hails from the bayous of Louisiana with a set of card tricks that could put your favorite magician to shame. He has a ridiculous accent, as well as a staff that helps him defeat enemies (when super-charged playing cards will not suffice).

The next X-Men film, Days Of Future Past, arrives in theaters May 23. Tatum can next be seen in 22 Jump Street this June. We’ll bring you more information as soon as additional details become available.
