We’ve been anxiously awaiting Wye Oak‘s new album, Shriek, for what feels like forever. But alas, finally, finally, it’s (almost) here. NPR has the album up for streaming in full a week before it comes out April 29 via Merge/City Slang, so go ahead and give it a listen.
Shriek is the Baltimore duo’s follow up to 2011’s Civilian. Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack’s new album was co-produced by Nicolas Vernhes at Brooklyn’s Rare Book Room and is, ambitiously, guitar-less. If none of that wins you over, go see them play the material live (where $2 of your ticket will be donated to a local charity). After the new songs I got to hear live at SXSW, it’s easy to say this won’t be a letdown.
For some visual accompaniment, don’t forget the surreal music video for “The Tower” is up for watching. The slow song gets contrasted by shots of house painters singing with their faces covered in paint while they dance in a parking garage. Yes — when we say surreal, we mean surreal.
Stream the album at NPR.
