Many bands are vocal advocates of environmental sustainability and the preservation of endangered species, but very few have addressed the issues by literally putting their music at risk of extinction. That is exactly what Portugal. The Man have done with “Endangered Song.” The Alaskan rock band’s new seven-inch is designed to degrade after a certain number of plays, and it is limited to 400 copies, corresponding to the number of Sumatran tigers left in the wild. The song was not released digitally, so it is up to fans to conserve the song by ripping and sharing it.
The vinyl record was not available for public purchase, but fortunately for fans, some people who were lucky enough to acquire one have made “Endangered Song” available to stream and download. You can find it after the break, along with a video explaining the background of the project.
Portugal. The Man’s latest non-endangered release is 2013’s Evil Friends. Pick up a copy right here.
