This Is Not A Joke: A ‘Peeps’ Movie Is In Development

Easter may have come and went, but the marshmallow treat most commonly associated with the bunny side of the holiday has one more surprise of its sleeve.

News broke this morning that development is underway for a film based on the confectionery treats known as Peeps. Yes, Peeps. The sugar-coated, animal-shaped delights that fill Easter baskets, inspire vodka flavors, sit atop donuts, and in recent years even attempted crossing over into other holidays are headed for the big screen in the years to come. God, if you’re out there, now is the time when we need you most.

The one upside to this crazy story is that the man behind the rights option is none other than filmmaker Adam Rifkin (Detroit Rock City). He and his partners Brent Tinter and Brian E. Rochlin acquired the rights from Peeps manufacturer Just Born after the company heard their pitch for a full-length animated feature. The film is being described, perhaps somewhat predictably, as a “Lego Movie-esque family epic.”

There is no specific plot description for the still untitled Peeps film, but we do know the basic premise. According to Deadline, the film will take place the night before a Peeps diorama contest. A single Peep gets misplaced and must make his way through other fantastical dioramas to get back home before the contest judging begins.

Rifkin claims he had the idea for the adventure after witnessing his own niece and nephew build Peeps dioramas for a school project. If you think about it, the idea of Peeps exploring various dioramas is not that different from the plot of Wreck-It Ralph (video game worlds) or The Lego Movie (themed worlds). It may be silly, but it might also work.

There is no release date for the Peeps movie yet, but we are almost certain you can expect an announcement trailer (or more) to be ready in time for Easter 2015.
