Ah, Joy Ride. Where have you been all these years?
Following a six year hiatus, which is admittedly shorter than the seven years that elapsed between the previous films, the sadistic road rage franchise known as Joy Ride has been given life once more for a third (and oh sweet God please let it be the last) installment.
Directed by Wrong Turn 3-5 mastermind Declan O’Brien, Joy Ride 3: Road Kill follows a group of a bro-tastic street racers whose shortcut to Road Rally 1000 puts them in the path of psychotic trucker Rusty Nail. The first trailer, which premiered on Fangoria earlier this week, sets all this up and offers franchise fans a few brutal glimpses of the carnage and high speed terror that will ensure. You can view the clip below.
The original Joy Ride hit theaters in 2001 and boasted a then relatively unknown cast featuring Paul Walker, Leelee Sobieski, and Steve Zahn. It was also co-written by J.J. Abrams. Yes, that J.J. Abrams. I was a big fan of that film, but the 2008 direct-to-DVD sequel was more or less a waste of time. Road Kill seems more akin to the latter, but I’ll keep my horror loving fingers crossed that I am wrong.
Joy Ride 3 arrives on DVD/Blu-ray June 17. I assume a digital release will happen around the same time.
