James Chance Signs With True Groove, Releases James Brown Cover

Tomás Doncker’s label, True Groove Records, seems to be constantly scouting and recruiting outstanding talents for its roster. We’ve drawn attention to all of True Groove’s artists over the past year: Kevin Jenkins, Marla Mase, Lael Summer, and Mr. Doncker himself have all been reviewed and or interviewed here at UTG. To follow suit, we’re happy to bring you the news that TGR have signed yet another gifted artist in No Wave icon, James Chance.

Chance’s influence stretches far and wide. having notably inspired renowned creators from a vast array of mediums, including Matt Groening (creator of The Simpsons, Futurama), filmmaker Jim Jarmusch (Coffee and Cigarettes, Only Lovers Left Alive), as well as musicians such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Talking Heads, and members of Blondie.

The collective has plans to begin recording a brand new full-length from Chance later this year but to celebrate his signing, The True Groove All-Stars kicked off his new path with a cover of James Brown’s classic “I Don’t Want Nobody” featuring Chance on vocals. You can stream the funky, full-of-life rendition after the jump.

Here’s a live performance of the track:
