Watch Andrew Garfield Nail His Trans Role in Arcade Fire’s “We Exist” Music Video

There’s been a lot of talk surrounding Arcade Fire’s newest album, Reflektor. Part of that comes from one of the songs, “We Exist,” telling the story of a son coming out to his father. Now, a few weeks after the band posted a teaser for the music video where Andrew Garfield was dressed in drag during their Coachella set, we get to see the remarkable video and footage come to life.

The “We Exist” music video, directed by David Wilson, follows the Amazing Spider-Man star as he tries to find a way to change gender identity in a redneck town. We see him endure mental struggles, hate crimes, hallucinations, and the powerful climax of being applauded by thousands of people. The decision to cast Garfield was clearly the right choice. He gives all of himself and then more to the role, so don’t be surprised if you get chills.
